The other day, Rob pointed me to an article on a topic which has been in the news quite a bit lately - the concern over the mercury contained in compact fluorescent (CFL) lamps. The original piece is here.
That article - and many others - gives the reader a somewhat inaccurate impression of the situation. Here’s a brief look at the use of compact fluorescent lighting, including the safe disposal of broken or used bulbs. Read the rest of this entry »
I’ve known this for years, that animals are better than me - geesh, I’m a cat owner. Ok, they own me, but it taught me what I know to be true… they’re better than us.
Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is in almost everything. I remember growing up knowing that MSG was in Chinese food as a flavor enhancer, but today, MSG is hidden in a wide variety of foods including baby food. These excitotoxins are hidden in everyday foods that we eat under names such as glutamate, aspartame, broth, casein or caseinate, textured protein, hydrolyzed or autolyzed yeast. Even such well know products such as whey protein, whey protein isolate and whey protein concentrate are some of the hidden sources of msg.
Apparently, animals exposed to MSG early in life prefer sweet foods later on. Obesity may be related to MSG exposure early on in life, says Dr Russell Blaylock, author of Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills. This is the first part of a series of videos on Monosodium Glutamate and your health.
The fastest way to be tempted by takeout is by culinary boredom. Eating out is also considered a major cause of obesity in America, according to a recent report by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

1Creative cooking If you can’t cook, why not take a cooking course? Check out the internet for exciting dishes, buy a cookbook or just start out with the basics. Remember, when creating a new recipe that it might take two or three times to get it just right. Make it your own but always have fun investigating and experimenting.
2Spice It Up! Sweet or spicy? Curry, garlic, tumeric, sea salt, Bragg’s Seasonings or try new herbs like Cillantro can kick your dish up a notch. Try using fresh herbs and taste the difference. Many spices are rich in antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial compounds.
Having access to any sort of information - in real time - can help make almost anything more effective. A car’s speedometer, a wristwatch; that thin red line you see on televised swimming finals.
When it comes to energy use around the house, this idea certainly holds true. Having an idea of the amount of electricity, water, gas etc which is being used can help you make real changes - quickly. And as you’re likely to be saving money in the process, the first place you’ll notice the benefits may just be your utility bills.
As with most things on the market, there are a number of options when it comes to energy monitoring. Here are a few of my favourites. Read the rest of this entry »
