Trying new foods.

What's in the food we eat? Which foods are most nutritious and which ones aren't?

Trying new foods.

I thought it would be great if our group shared some new foods they tried, what they thought and if they tried them in a recipe. I'm always looking for something new. If you are aware of the nutritional value or benefits of the veggie or food please let us know.. :grouphug

I'll start off. I have to admit, when I read Darlene's post about Butternut Squish that I had never eaten Butternut Squash. So, I had to go on the Internet to make sure there was a picture so I could pick the right one. What a funny looking thing! :shifty: So, I went to the store and asked the Produce Clerk where their Butternut Squash was and he took me over. I asked him what I look for when I select and he looked at me funny. Well, I am not peeling (which is not an easy task) and cutting up the squash for this recipe. Details to follow.

OSC - I cut it off in circles from the top down, then cut the rind off.

When I get to the middle I scrape out the seeds and continue cutting in circles. Like you would a melon - exactly like that, it's just tougher. It's worth it, trust me!

Ya I had not tried Butternut Squash until Darlene...it is kinda like my life before Darlene and then after...(sorry, I don't mean to tease but it is kinda true). ;)

Darlene's Sweet Potatoe soup is good - although I love sweet potatoes.

I tried organic wheat grass a few months ago...I liked it but eating healthy is not always cheap so I focus on Sunrider products and organic from the stores (as much as I can).

Cooking fresh baby spinach in my morning omelete is new. It is very healthy for me and it tastes good. There is a reason Popey ate it before he beat up Brutus!

I really got into Quinoa (grain) about 6 months ago...and eating it live for more nutrition...live = soaking it in water for a few hours until I see little sprouts come out...very very good for you.

you're gonna give me a fat head! honestly I just started learning all this myself 2 years ago too.

tofu - you can do all sorts of things with it.

extra firm - cut into cubes and put into a stir fry
soft - put into a smoothie to thicken it
smoked - cut into slices, eat on its own or put in a salad

tempeh - less processed form or soy than tofu. You can crumble it into stuff, cook like a burger, put into stir fry, etc.
