I'm very thankful that I've always avoided artificial sweeteners. In the olden days before I watched what I ate, I ate real sugar because I like sweets. Once I cut out [most of] the sweets, I never substituted sweeteners because I just can't stand the way they taste. No matter the claims of how "real" each one tastes, I find the flavor atrocious. I lucked out, apparently. This sounds really interesting and I’ve put it in my Netflix queue. I’m very thankful that I’ve always avoided artificial sweeteners. At one point, I was drinking 3-4 a day. I noticed that for me, my heart rate increased to the point of feeling cramps in my chest, I was suffering from headaches and they did not* quench my thirst. It has been one year since I've stopped drinking diet pop and am currently in the process of eliminating any artificial sweetners. The evidence keeps mounting that diet sodas are not only bad for your health, they don't help you lose weight either. In fact, recent research indicates that they lead to weight gain. I had to laugh (thankfully though) that it finally made it to the news. Why the dangers of aspartame have been kept quiet for so long is beyond me. Purdue University just came out with a study on how aspartame and similar products affect our health and weight. In fact I just wrote a blog myself on this same subject on http://blog.nutritiondata.com/dieting_weight_loss_blog/2008/02/obesity-contrib.html#comments about artificial sweeteners and weight loss. There's also a book out called "Excitoxins, the Taste that Kills" by Dr. Russell Baylock that goes into great depth about the health problems with aspartame and MSG. Food poisoning is a sepsis.(the presence of harmful microorganisms or associated toxins in the blood and tissues), that is caused by consuming foods that are contaminated with pathogenic bacteria, toxins, viruses, prions or parasites. I'm a recovering Diet Coke addict :-) 6 -8 cans a day. I quit cold-turkey about a month ago. The first 3 days I experienced a severe headache and was very thirsty. Hopefully this is the last time I have to see my eye doctor (I think he's getting sick of me). My prescription has improved 2 times this month. He dismissed my Aspartame poisoning claim. He thinks I’m nuts and referred me to my family physician 3 weeks ago. 1 week into my detox: weight 182lbs, blood sugar prick test (sugar meter?? I don't know what they're called) 124 which prompted a lab blood test which came back as negative for Diabetes & Thyroid levels were normal. That was 3 weeks ago. Today I'm down 8lbs w/out any other changes to my diet or exercise routine!!! Oh that's right: I'm not craving sweets or carbs anymore. So I'm not mindlessly filling my face w/ snack crackers or M&Ms. My blood sugar w/ a prick test is now normal (90 or below). I have not had a headache in the last month; my asthma is gone, no more racing heart... I don't know exactly how to explain it... more like an anxiety reaction but no stimulator, I use to get a rash/hives towards the end of the day (this I knew had something to do w/ the Diet Coke but didn't want to admit)... gone and this is a weird one, I use to get tongue tied a lot almost like racing thoughts and my mouth couldn't keep up... gone. I will never ever ever touch that stuff again. Pay close attention to the labels because it's in almost everything. It's disguised under different names. It's in a lot of your kid's food: cereal, yogurt, icecream, popsicles, fruit snacks & low-sugar fruit drinks. My kids hate me right now but they'll get over it. The easiest way to spot it on a food lable is to look for the Phenylaetonurics warning. If that warning is anywhere on the label it's in the product. This is great information. It's a testimony like yours that allows others to see what is possible when letting go of the soda, diet or otherwise. I'm glad you had so much success already. I am about 4 months pregnant and had been suffering from severe headaches for several weeks. After talking with my midwife we decided I should cut out all artificial sweeteners from my diet. Within a couple days I was headache free. I also noticed that my heart did not race like it had been. I was not shaky and nervous. Anytime I would be in a stressful situation my stomach would bloat and I would be in pain. That's gone now. I have more energy and feel more alert but able to relax. I tried to see if I could use Splenda but it gave me a headache right away. I found this post to be quite interesting.
