I absolutly loved this article! You are brilliant and you really stated the facts. I have a huge report due on Spartan women and your articla was an enourmous help. I have not seen the movie you have referred to but I guess I should if you recommend it! I loved how you made connections to your own life and how the women did it in Sparta. Like when you said “I would jump off the cliff after my baby”. I look forward to reading more of your amazing articles.

Thanks!

Great article! I have seen the movie 300 and loved it! From what I saw about the Spartan culture (from the movie), it built it’s people with confidence – to take pride in who they were and to have integrity. I don’t feel a lot of that in our current society. If you look pretty/handsome, have a good body and drive the right car/have the right house, then you are successful…but that could not be further from the truth. These things are more ego/pride than confidence/strength.

In your article you ask why did we stop? The bitter/cynical side of me wants to say we never really started. We create our own society by our actions…My feeling is that exercise/ health/confidence are just now becoming important…not starving ourselves to be a perfect size 0…we are now beginning to figure it out. I hope we get to the point where the men can workout naked again! Here’s to hope! **lift a glass**

Thank you so much for the comment. These women were very strong but there is alot more to that. We will all be learning more about why they were this way in the next few articles. Stay strong and beautiful! Blessings!

Love this story Kandace! If you want a geat read about both the spartan men and women, the book “Gates of Fire” is wonderful. It is the more acurate story of what happened in “300″. And it give more on the Spartan Women.

Hugs

I am so happy you enjoyed the article. I am not writing so much for Rob right now, I have been busy with my own work, but that could change as most things do. I really enjoyed your comments! Have a wonderful night!!!

um. not really. From evidence like Andromaque by Euripides, spartan women had no issue with wrestling naked at the gym, most likely with men. Some translations say leaving their clothes behind, other say, with bare breast. Hard to say. They had little issue with war and strength, and perhaps also fought in battle. The people behind 300 couldn’t have known this, and if they had, couldn’t show such things in christian america.

Other people say such things from Sparta also served as a model for Socrates’ concept of the polis, and thus the public and politics. No issue with women being shameful being naked in public. Only in societies where women have little power, does eventually develop the idea that it’s wrong and shameful to do such things, even to have sexual modesty.
